Steve Niles returns with his new ongoing series of the hugely successful '30 Day of Night' franchise. However the setting has moved from its origination in Barrow,AlaskatoLos Angeles.

The story opens with a letter being typed to the main character 'Alice Blood', warning her of the impending danger of her newly started website.Aliceis warned 'they are real' and that if she really seeks them, she will be found. We are not provided any narrative on the sender other than she is based in a snowy climate.

The story then increases pace with a group of vampire 'elders', who are gathered and fast becoming impatient waiting for a group of younger breeds to arrive. When they arrive led by a weapon wielding 'Jill', their impact is immediate with the massacre of the elders.

The reader is finally introduced to Alice who is carrying a large amount of correspondence from her websites viewers. The website is called 'Desperately Seeking Vampire', and I think the title says it all.Aliceis shown to be bright, strong and aware (at least she thinks she is) of the risks involved with a search like hers.

We then learn more about the vampire power struggle. Jill maybe leading the battle, however we are also introduced to 'the father' who's plotting has led to these actions. He is not content with their species having to live in secret, he is aware of their superior position in the food chain and he wants to make sure they return to their rightful place on top. The last segment concludes with a human hanging from the ceiling, arteries cut providing the drink that they toast their plan over. This is the first sign of the fate that could be awaiting the human race if they succeed in their plans of dominance.

The comic closes with Alice meeting with Dean Ikos who claims to have seen a vampire. Although she is clearly distracted by his good looks, she hears his tale of surviving an attack with his Uncle as a child. He is aware of how the story may sound, and the lack of evidence didn't help validate it, however it was the mention of Barrow,Alaskathat regained her attention.Aliceremembers the letter she received with the reference of Barrow, and verbally attacks Dean for wasting her time for his entertainment and leaves.

Although fuming, she still thinks he is 'hot' before turning back to speak to him. However, she can see a figure on the rooftops stalking Dean. We are introduced to our first attack and sees Dean being feasted upon by the stalking vampire. The final twist of the tale is thatAliceis revealed as a FBI agent.

I have really become a fan of IDW comics. Not only do they have some great stories, but the quality of the paper is great. Sam Keith's artwork suitsNiles's dark story perfectly as does the colouring by Jay Fotos. The dark shading set a tone of decay and loss which fits the story being told. First issues are always harder to judge then later issues as the writer needs to provide enough narrative to bring the reader to speed, although they have ensure nothing gets lost.

Editor review

Story 4/5 - Fans ofNile's work will not be disappointed in this new series. Even if you haven't read any previous 30DoN stories but like your vampire tales to be more 'monster' focussed as opposed to a Twilight type story, then this is one for you. A strong opening that lets the reader know exactly what is install for them.

Artwork 4/5 - The dark tones and settings of the story are perfectly captured by Sam Keith's artwork. Keith doesn't rely on overly detailed animation and focuses on highlighting key parts of what is being told.

Cover 3/5 - Although there is nothing wrong with the cover, there is little to draw a potential reader in. However, after seeing covers for #2&3 I think this is something that will improve.

I appreciate the nice layout of the plot summary in this review (LJK, nice work), but I think the ratings in all categories are quite high.

Thanks for the comments, I will take them on board with future scoring. This is only my second review so there is the possibility that I might have been slightly 'generous' . Not sure if you have read The Strain or Monocyte, but I would be keen to get your views on them as I have posted a review on one and will be writing about Monocyte over the next few days.

LJK - good review on the plot. You nailed enough history and a good amount of the issue movement to give it justice. Right on.

I do think this review needs to be quite a bit more critical of both writer (Niles) and artist (Keith).

Note: before delving into this series, I HIGHLY suggest the reader go through the Steve Niles / Ben Templesmith series of 30 Days first. This critique makes much more sense, and unlike many of the current comic relaunches, the back story about Barrow and the vampire movement is needed.

Stand alone, each of these men are great at their trade. As a team, I really think they fail to communicate. Niles tells the story well, but bare-boned as usual. His pacing allows for wonderful dark elements to creep in. Keith is magnificent at drawing characters who battle with internal, emotionally crippling struggles.

In issue #1, it really seems these two missed the mark. I really, really like Keith, but it is clear that he got lazy on this issue. He often goes between extreme hatching/detail, and blurry outlines. In this title, it just doesn't work. Yet.

To evolve as an artist, he needs to draw more like the two panels in this story where the colorist added needed depth. The panels just after she collects her mail, and the final panel of the issue. I am not dissecting panel by panel; I am just giving reference on something to build on.

I am hoping more internal struggle takes place in the new run. If there is less 'human vs. vampire' for survival, and more 'knowledge of what to do about them' taking the main stage, this title could improve in leaps and bounds.

I had great hopes for #1, but was let down.

Again, LKJ, thanks for your review and critique. There should be more fans of this title and its history. I look forward to what you have to say about the next issues!
