WONDERCON becomes staging ground for several important announcements from Marvel

At this year's WONDERCON, Marvel unveiled plans for a new Captain Marvel series, starring Carol Danvers as she becomes the fifth in line to the mantle of the Universe's protector. The series is to be scribed by Kelly Sue DeConnick (who penned last year's critically-acclaimed Osborn: Evil Incarcerated) and relative newcommer Dexter Soy. When asked about details, DeConnick had this to say:

"My pitch was called ‘Pilot’ and the take can pretty much be summed up with ‘Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager. Carol's the virtual definition of a Type A personality. She's a competitor and a control freak. At the start of our series, we see Carol pre-Captain Marvel, pre-NASA even, back when she was a fiercely competitive pilot. We'll see her meeting one of her aviation heroes and we'll see her youthful bravado, her swagger. Then over the course of the first arc we're going to watch her find her way back to that hungry place. She'll have to figure out how to be both Captain Marvel and Chuck Yeager—to marry the responsibility of that legacy with the sheer joy being nearly invulnerable and flying really [expletive] fast.
My playlist for this series is heavy on AC/DC, Heart and Pat Benatar."

The kudos really goes to david for going to the trouble of posting this for me, really! Thanks a bunch for that, I was afraid that this was going to start oxidising if it waited much longer.

I am pleasantly surprised by the Captain Marvel decision, though ambivalent about the new look. Hopefully it's not going to garner as much fan outrage as the Power Girl costume change (oh all that moaning about the belated cleavage window!).

I am actually pumped for Brian Wood getting more permanent work on X-Men. I haven't seen him on mainstream stuff before, and while I like his WATXM mini I am eager to see what he can do with a full deck of cards.

Abt the Thunderbolts thing...a very meh reaction. But I am intrigued to see how Ragnarok of all people (or rather, cyborgs) figures into a team that has to act ostensibly heroic. What are the chances that he will driven to fits of uncontrollable rage every time someone mentions the real Thor, or better yet, actually runs into the guy once again?

I'm not a huge fan of legacy characters. Renaming the Thunderbolts does nothing for me. I'm sorry, thunderbolts fans, they just don't appeal to me. It's commendable, though, that Marvel tries to increase the book's sales instead of just cancelling it.

I'll be trying to support Carol in her new role, but I really think making her the new Capetian Marvel is a bad move for reasons I have already gone into elsewhere.
For the Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers, I'm not sure on it, but I guess I'll stick around. Not sure the name change will help sales any though.

It's funny you mention the new Power Girl because when I first saw a pic of Carol as Capt Marvel, I thought it was another new Power Girl design

I guess it's the butch blond haircut.

@Captain Darling: having already seen Punisher as a mob boss, Punisher as an angel of vengeance, and Punisher as Frankenstein...I am somehow afraid that Marvel might go for your sort of pitch if the current volume by Rucka bombs in the long run.

@pretender: Yeah, there are some similarities to Power-Girl's new look in World's Finest, aren't they? BTW, just found that Jamie McKelvie designed this new costume. Love the artist. It looks sort of better how he drew it:

He also had this to say:

Our idea was to give her a kind of swash-buckling costume that invoked a sense of her history as an Air Force officer. Her hair is slicked back at the sides when in costume - so her Kree-style helmet can form when she needs it.
